Participating Teams

The OWCS Major will feature eight teams from across our three competition regions of NA, EMEA, and Asia. Read more below to learn more about each team competing at DreamHack Stockholm!

NA

The Toronto Defiant have established a dominant run the likes of which is not often seen in the Overwatch Esports world. While they’ve faced no shortage of challenge from teams like NRG Shock and NTMR, their consistency and strength under pressure have netted them all four NA Stage Championships this year.

As the first team to mathematically qualify via their Circuit Point total, the Defiant will enter Stockholmsmässan with the OWCS Finals Trophy firmly in their sights. While they dropped out of the Dallas Major earlier than they would have liked, the back half of their season has been dominant enough to warrant respect on the international stage. Underestimate the Defiant at your own peril…

The Defiant will look to start their OWCS World Finals run off on the right foot with a first-round match up at 2pm CET against EMEA’s #2 seed, ENCE.

In 2024, dozens of teams across all three regions have taken advantage of our new, more open competitive ecosystem to fight their way through the ranks and join long-established orgs and rosters in the biggest tournaments of the year. No team has taken advantage of the OWCS ecosystem more than NTMR, our #2 seed out of North America.

NTMR joined the OWCS in full swing in Stage 3, and quickly rose through the ranks of North America’s top teams. While the org is new, the players are grizzled vets to a one, with standout talents like Alex “seeker” Taylor and Boston “Infekted” Fine serving as key pieces in NTMR’s high-tempo style.

The team placed third in OWCS Stage 3 after losing a closer-than-close Map 5 scenario against the Toronto Defiant, and were inches away from a Stage 4 championship after taking the Defiant to a Map Seven in the NA Grand Finals. With a single Genji Deflect on Lijiang Tower separating this squad from victory against NA’s quadruple-crown champions, the region is looking mighty coming into Stockholm. We reached out to Infekted to get a feel for his OWCS experience so far, and what he’s looking to accomplish in Stockholm:

“It’s been great playing with NTMR, because all of our players and staff have so much passion to improve and take down the other teams. I’m glad our hard work paid off during Stage 4, and we were able to become a real competitor against Toronto. Our main focus now [in the Finals] is beating the EMEA teams, as well as punching up against the KR teams to prove that NA is still a competitive region internationally.”

Catch NTMR’s first match of the weekend at 1pm CET against EMEA’s two-time champs, Spacestation Gaming.

You know ‘em, you love ‘em - our third seed out of NA are none other than NRG Shock, who ditched their robes in Dallas and never looked back. In the stages between Major and Finals, the Shock have beefed up their roster with some high-caliber additions, including former M80 flex support Benjamin “Ultraviolet” David and a terrifying pair of tank players (Former FNATIC front-liner Kim “Attack Jun-hwa, and former Twisted Mind Kim “Kellan” Min-jae).

While the team qualified for Stockholm by the skin of their teeth, there’s no reason you should count this squad out early. General Manager Albert “yeHHH” Yeh and Head Coach Eric “Wheats” Perez have two of the strongest resumes in North American Overwatch, and have shown they have what it takes to get their rosters in fighting fitness when the rubber hits the road. We reached out to Yeh to reflect on the team’s performance before they head to Stockholm:

“[We’re] just focused on putting Stage 4 behind us. We know we’re a way better team than what we showed, and just need to iron out the kinks before Stockholm. Definitely helps some that there’s a new patch.

I think our X factor is that teams will underestimate us and not prep as hard. We added a bunch of players with LAN experience (Kellan, Attack, Ultraviolet, TR33), so I think anything can happen when we get on stage. We’re stronger than we were in Dallas, and there’s no pressure on us to perform - which is a prime opportunity to punch up.”

NRG are up against the big dogs early in Stockholm, as they face off against Dallas Major champions Crazy Raccoon in the first round.

EMEA

Flying into home territory as the #1 seed, Spacestation is heating up at just the right time. The addition of former Twisted Minds tank Alhumaidi "KSAA" Alruwaili has been a shot in the arm for this long-standing roster, giving it the flexibility needed to tackle any meta, any time.

One could argue that no roster joins the Finals lineup with more synergy than SSG - and with a homefield advantage for DPS super star William “SparkR” Andersson, expect the crowd to go wild for this lovable crew. We reached out to SparkR for his thoughts on returning home for the Finals - and what fans should try while they’re in his neck of the woods:

“Playing in my country and having people speak Swedish to me might be weird at first in a LAN experience,” he said, “But I think playing the tourney itself will be like any other. My parents will be there to cheer me on, too.”

As for Swedish attractions? “Sweden’s known for its meatballs, cinnamon buns, and Ikea… but every place has an Ikea, so maybe an “authentic Swedish” one ain’t all that special. Try the meatballs, at least, so you can say you’ve tried them. Oh, and MAX, the burger chain - I got Landon hooked on it.”

EMEA’s #1 seed faces off against NA runner-ups NTMR in the first round.

EMEA’s #2 seed has been in a thunderous back and forth with Spacestation across the entirety of 2024. Across the OWCS and multiple FACEIT League seasons, the two juggernauts have clashed against each other eleven times - and the results have rarely disappointed.

After a 3-0 upper bracket victory for ENCE in Stage 4, many assumed that a decisive sweep was in order when the two met again in the EMEA Grand Finals. As Head Coach Christopher “ChrisTFer” Graham had predicted, however, the team’s penchant for quick strategy pivots allowed Spacestation to surprise their Finnish rivals and steal away EMEA’s #1 seed going into Stockholm.

Now, this powerhouse roster - full of generational talents like EMEA MVP hopeful Kevin “Kevster” Persson and long-time tank mainstay Ilari “Vestola” Vestola - must fight their way through a harrowing bracket to make a push for the trophy. Their first round opponent are NA’s 4-time champion Toronto Defiant - and even if they win, their second opponents would either be NRG Shock, or Crazy Raccoon. No pressure, right?

After taking an early Circuit Points lead via their Stage 1 championship, EMEA’s #3 seed had to fight hard just to make it here to the World Finals. Fight hard they did, though, and Twisted Minds once again seek victory on the international stage. The entire roster has shown strong performances this year, with DPS players Ibrahem "Quartz" Alali Abdulelah “LBBD7” (pronounced ‘lab-duh’) Alfaifi proving to be particular standouts in their most recent matches. A word of advice for their opponents in Stockholm: Don’t let Quartz play Widowmaker. Seriously. Just Don’t.

Twisted Minds face off against Asia’s #1 seeded Team Falcons for our very first match of the tournament on Friday at 11am CEST.

Asia

The most impactful storyline of the year has been the back-and-forth rivalry between Asia’s undisputed top two. Team Falcons and Crazy Raccoon have faced off TEN times this year - and while the record currently sits at 7-3 in CR’s favor, (27-10 by maps), their most recent matches set the stage for the two going into Stockholm.

In Asia’s Stage 2 playoffs, Team Falcons faced Crazy Raccoons three times. FLC took a 3-1 victory in the Korean regional semifinals, but fell to CR in Map 5 of their first match-up in the Asia Main Event. After another five-map game against Zeta Division, the Falcons clawed (taloned?) their way to a Map 7 victory against our Dallas Major champions to secure themselves the #1 seed out of Asia. For those keeping score, yes, that IS seventeen maps of Overwatch in one day, and yes, that IS completely insane.

“I'm thrilled to have won the championship in Asia, especially after missing the victory in the Stage 1 tournament.,” says longtime veteran Yoo "smurf" Myeong-hwan. “I’m hopeful that we can return from our first time visiting Sweden with the incredible experience of a championship win. We have no other plans but to focus on that victory.”

Our #1 seed out of Asia will face off against Twisted Minds for the first match of the tournament at 11am CET on Friday, November 22!

Our Dallas Major champions are looking to make 2024 a year to remember with a win in Stockholm. Crazy Raccoon have been challenged more heavily in the back half of 2024 - see our breakdown above - but even with that thoroughly entertaining loss at the hands of Team Falcons, the team doesn’t seem too worried as they pack their bags for Stockholm.

“I’m so excited about going to Stockholm, but winning is our top priority - and winning is fun. We're ready to put in the hard work to bring some uniquely exciting Crazy Raccoon games to Sweden,” says Dallas Major MVP and CR tank player Park "Junbin" Jun-bin.

“I don’t believe [us being the #2 seed] has a major impact. We’re approaching each match with the ultimate goal of winning the championship. I’m not even too set on winning MVP in Stockholm this time - I’d like to see our DPS players receive it instead!”

Crazy Raccoon will face off against NRG Shock for the second game of the tournament on Friday, November 22.

Conclusion

We’re so excited to be bringing this incredible year of OWCS to a thrilling end in Stockholm! The OWCS World Finals is the final step in a long 2024 journey for so many teams, players, staff, and crew members - and we’re all ready to deliver you an event worth remembering!
